1. N이/가 몇 개 있어요?

In the last post, we've learned how to say existence.
And today, we will upgrade that sentence more.
We can use '몇+unit noun' when we ask about quantity.
  • 가방이 몇 개 있어요?
  • 동생이 몇 명 있어요?
  • 강아지가 몇 마리 있어요?

【 Important Tip 】

When we say '몇+Unit noun', the pronunciation of '몇' varies according to 'Unit noun'.
Let's see below consonants.
     ㅂ ㅅ
When we pronounce the 'red' consonants, our vocal chords is vibrate.
And if these consonants come after '몇', it is pronounced as ''.
For 'blue' consonants, if '몇' comes before these consonants, these are pronounced as 'double consonant'.
Like, 'ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ'.
Let's take a look with some of 'unit nouns' that are usually used in daily life.

[멷깨]
objects
[면명]
people (normal)
[멷뿐]
people (honorific)
마리
[면마리]
animals
[멷짱]
thin, flat objects such as paper
[멷꿘]
books
[멷짠]
cups
[멷뼝]
bottles
[멷때]
vehicles
켤레
[멷켤레]
pairs such as socks, shoes

2. N이/가 ____개 있어요.

The answer is very simple.
We just change '몇' to 'Pure-Korean number'.
  • 가방이 한 개 있어요.
  • 동생이 두 명 있어요.
  • 강아지가 세 마리 있어요.

Now, let's practice hard! :)

  • 가방이 있어요.
  • 동생이 있어요.
  • 강아지가 없어요.

2. N은/는 N이/가 있어요/없어요.

Let's add 'N은/는' to the sentence.
We've learned that we can consider '은/는' as the pointing something with finger.

[Korean training] N은/는 뭐예요? (Beginner)

안녕하세요? I'm your Korean language trainer Danny.★

you'll be able to speak various expressions yourself.
And I recommend you to change example sentences with words
that you usually use in daily life.
Because it is effective to study the words that you use most often first.
화이팅! 😊

1. N은/는 뭐예요?

This is a question "What's N?"
And the answer is 'N은/는 N이에요/예요' that we've already practiced.
Click → [ N은/는 N이에요/예요 ]
As I mentioned let's consider that '은/는' is points something with finger.
Imagine that you are pointing at something with your fingers.
Let's practice.
  • 이것은 뭐예요? → 이것 책상이에요.
  • 저것은 뭐예요? → 저것 의자예요.

2. N이/가 뭐예요?

Some nouns don't have shape that can not be pointed with fingers.
In this case we can use '이/가'.
For example,
  • 이름이 뭐예요?
  • 직업이 뭐예요?
  • 취미가 뭐예요?

Now, let's see the answer.
  • 이름이 뭐예요? → 제 이름 데니예요.
  • 직업이 뭐예요? → 제 직업 선생님이에요.
  • 취미가 뭐예요? → 제 취미수영이에요.
Here, we have one question.
We can not point out these nouns '이름', '직업' and '취미'.
But why the answers are '이름', '직업' and '취미는'?
Now, we can learn one more thing about the meaning of '은/는'.
We can use '은/는' even these nouns can not be pointed out.
It because, they are old information.
This means that we use '은/는' to repeat the word that we mentioned already.
Just before, your Korean skills have been upgraded. 😄

Now, let's practice hard! :)

[Korean training] N은/는 N이/가 아니에요 (Beginner)

안녕하세요? I'm your Korean language trainer Danny.★

you'll be able to speak various expressions yourself.
And I recommend you to change example sentences with words

Because it is effective to study the words that you use most often first.
화이팅! 😊

1. N이/가 아니에요.

Today, we are going to learn negative expression.
As I mentioned on the last posting, '은/는' and '이/가' is really confusing.
Therefore, don't separate 'N이/가' and '아니에요' now.
Just think of it as one form.
  1. 받침 o → N이
  2. 받침 x → N가
         ✦ '받침' = last consonant
Let's practice.
I hope you can change 'N' to other words that you can use usually.
  • 책상이 아니에요.
  • 의자가 아니에요.
  • 선생님이 아니에요.

2. N은/는 N이/가 아니에요.

We've learned that '은/는' is the pointing something with finger.
It's the same today.
  • 이것 책상이 아니에요.
  • 저것 의자가 아니에요.
  • 선생님이 아니에요.

Now, let's practice hard! :)

1. N은/는

Many Korean learners are confused about '은/는 and 이/가'.
It is the same that they make subject.
However, the meaning is different depending on the situation.
Let's learn one by one.
Today, let's consider that '은/는' is points something with finger.
You can also think of it as '='.

  1. 받침 o → N은
  2. 받침 x → N는
         ✦ '받침' = last consonant

2. N은/는 N이에요/예요.

Let's make some sentences with the structure of this.
  • 이것 책상이에요.
  • 저것 의자예요.
  • 선생님이에요.

【 Important Tip 】

'You', 'He' or 'She' is translated into Korean '당신', '그', '그녀'.
But we don't say these words in conversation.
Instead, we say their 'name', 'job' or 'position'.
For example,
  • 당신은 선생님이에요. → 데니 씨는 선생님이에요.
  • 그는 데니예요. → 선생님은 데니예요.

[Korean training] How to read Korean naturally? (Beginner, Intermediate)

안녕하세요? I'm your Korean language trainer Danny.★

Today, let's talk about how to read Korean naturally.
It is a waste of time to study all of the pronunciation rules of Korean because there are so many rules and so many exceptions.
In addition, almost all Koreans don't know these rules, but they use them naturally without consciousness.
Therefore, it is better to practice reading and speaking many sentences rather than studying to find out that pronunciation.
Now, I will explain only the two most common pronunciation rules.

    1. Reading smoothly

    • If there is a consonant 'ㅇ' after Batchim, move Batchim to the position of the consonant 'ㅇ'.

        [ex]
    1. 잘 지냈어요? → [잘 지내써요?]
    2. 다음에 만나요. → [다으메 만나요.]
    3. 이름이 뭐예요? → [이르미 뭐에요?]

    • If that Batchim is double consonant, move only the second one.
        [ex]
    1. 의자에 앉으세요. → [의자에 안즈세요.]
    2. 책을 읽어요. → [채글 일거요.]

We have learned about Korean pronunciation rules so far.
If you know these two rules, it will help you to speak Korean naturally.
But there are also exceptions, so you need a lot of practice. :)

[Daily Korean] 고맙습니다 vs. 감사합니다 (Beginner, Intermediate)

안녕하세요? I'm your Korean language trainer Danny.★

'Thank you' is '고맙습니다' or '감사합니다' in Korean.
So, what's the difference between them?
    '고맙습니다' is pure Korean.
    And '감사합니다' is Chinese character.

Korea, China, and Japan are all use Chinese character.
So, many Korean learners feel difficult because pure Korean and Chinese character are used together.
But if you can speak Korean, you can know that there are many similar words in Chinese and Japanese.
For example, '감사(感謝)' is read '캉샤' in Japanese. Isn't it really similar? :)

Many Koreans have a habit of using Chinese characters when spoken in formal language.
So there are many Koreans who think '감사합니다' is a more polite than '고맙습니다'.
    But it's not.
I rather prefer to use pure Korean, '고맙습니다'.
My favorite news anchor also uses '고맙습니다' at the end of the news.

The explanation was long, but the conclusion is,
'고맙습니다' and '감사합니다' are free to use. :)

    고맙습니다!

    [Daily Korean] '~(으)러' (Beginner)

오늘의 한국어 공부 (Today's Korean learning)

▶ 한국어 공부 시작.^^ (Korean learning, here we begin.^^)

    회사에 가요 + 일해요

    이 두 문장을 하나로 만들려면 어떻게 할 수 있을까요?
How we can make these two sentences together?

    정답을 먼저 알려드릴께요.
I'll let you know the answer first.

    정답 : 회사 일하 가요.

'가다/오다'와 같은 이동을 의미하는 동사의 목적을 나타낼 때, '~(으)러'를 사용합니다.
We use '~(으)러' when expressing the purpose of a verb that means movement like '가다/오다'.

동사에 받침이 있으면 '으러'를 받침이 없으면 ''를 쓰면 됩니다.
If there is last consonant '으러' is used, and if there is no last consonant '' is used.

    이 때, 장소를 나타내는 단어에는 '~에'를 사용합니다.
At this time, '~에' is used for the word indicating the place.

    간단하게 '~에 ~(으)러 가요/와요' 를 묶어서 연습하면 좋을 것 같아요.
I think it would be simple if you practice together like '~에 ~(으)러 가요/와요'.

    예문으로 연습해 볼까요?
Let's practice with some example sentences.

       1. 학교 한국어를 배우 가요.
       2. 식당 밥을 먹으러 가요.
       3. 친구가 우리집 왔어요.
       4. 몸이 아파서 병원 진찰을 받으러 왔어요.

    [Daily Korean] '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요' (Beginner & Intermediate)

오늘의 한국어 공부 (Today's Korean learning)

    '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요'

▶ 한국어 공부 시작.^^ (Korean learning, here we begin.^^)

      1. 한국어를 수 있어요.
      2. 내일은 힘 수 있어요.

    '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요'는 2가지 의미가 있습니다.
There are two meanings of '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요'.

하지만, 한 번에 2가지의 의미를 공부하는 것 보다는 첫 번째 의미를 먼저 충분히 연습해서 익숙해진 후에 두 번째 의미를 추가로 공부하는 것을 추천합니다.
However, rather than studying two meanings at a time, I recommend that you practice the first meaning first, and then practice the second meaning after you get used to the first meaning.

그럼, 첫 번째 의미 부터 공부해 보겠습니다.
Let's study from the first meaning.

    【 첫 번째 의미 】

    : 어떤 것을 할 수 있는 능력
      Ability to do something.

초급 단계에서 배우는 '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요'의 의미는 어떤 것을 할 수 있는 능력입니다.
The meaning of '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요' to learn at the beginner level is the ability to do something.

    예문으로 연습해 보겠습니다.
Let's practice with the example sentences.

In this way, you can only use verb in front of '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요' when expressing the ability to do something.

그리고 동사에 받침이 없다면 '~ㄹ 수 있어요'를 사용하고, 동사에 받침이 있다면 '~을 수 있어요'를 사용합니다.
And if the verb doesn't have prop consonant, it can use '~ㄹ 수 있어요' and if the verb have prop consonant, it can use '~을 수 있어요'.

만약, 부정을 나타내고 싶다면 '있어요' 대신 '없어요'를 사용하면 됩니다.
If you want to say negation, you can use '없어요' instead of '있어요'.

    【 두 번째 의미 】

    : 어떤 상황이 가능함
     Possibility of situation

첫 번째 의미가 익숙해진 중급 학습자라면 두 번째 의미에 대해서도 연습해 봅시다.
If you are intermediate learner who is accustomed to the first meaning, let's practice the second meaning more.

       - 우산 챙기세요. 오후에 비가 올 수 있어요.
       - 열심히 공부하면 한국어를 잘 할 수 있어요.
       - 이렇게 하는 것이 더 좋을 수 있어요.  : 좋다 (형용사)

이와 같이, 어떤 상황이 가능하다는 의미를 나타낼 때는 동사 뿐만 아니라 형용사도 사용할 수 있습니다.
In this way, you can use not only verb but also adjective in front of '~(으)ㄹ 수 있어요' when expressing the possibility of situation.

[Daily Korean] '무슨', '뭐' ?? Difference between '무슨', '뭐' (Beginner)

오늘의 한국어 공부 (Today's Korean learning)

    '무슨', '뭐'

▶ 한국어 공부 시작.^^ (Korean learning, here we begin.^^)

    무슨 샀어요?

위 문장은 맞는 문장입니까? 틀린 문장입니까?
Is this sentence is right? or wrong?

한국어 학습자들이 의문문을 만들 때 자주 틀리는 것 중 하나가 '무슨'과 '뭐'의 차이입니다.
Difference between '무슨' and '뭐' is one of that Korean learners make a mistake.

둘 다 영어로는 'what'으로 번역이 되어 많이 헷갈릴 수도 있을 것 같습니다.
Both of them are translated into 'what' in English, and I think they can get a lot confused.

하지만 이것을 구분하는 것은 매우 간단합니다.
But it is very easy to distinguish between them.

       - 무슨 + Noun
       - 뭐    + Verb

이제 '무슨 샀어요?'라는 문장은 틀린 문장이라는 것을 바로 알 수 있겠지요?
Now, you can see that the sentence '무슨 샀어요?' is wrong.

그럼 맞는 문장으로 수정하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?
So, how do you correct this sentence?

    '샀어요'가 동사이므로 '뭐'를 사용해서 '뭐 샀어요?'라고 할 수 있습니다.
Because '샀어요' is verb, you can say '뭐 샀어요?' using '뭐'.

    참고로 '뭐'는 '무엇을'의 줄임말입니다.
For reference, '뭐' is short for '무엇을'.

    즉, '무엇을 샀어요?'도 같은 말입니다.
In other words, '무엇을 샀어요?' is also same sentence.

길게 설명하는 것보다 예문을 많이 보는 것이 더 효과적일 것 같습니다.
I think it is more effective to see a lot of example sentences than explain a lot.

    아래 예문을 많이 읽어보세요.
Please read examples below a lot.

       Q. 뭐 샀습니까?
       A. 책을 샀습니다.
       Q. 무슨 책을 샀습니까?
       A. 소설책을 샀습니다.

       Q. 뭐 합니까?
       A. 공부를 합니다.
       Q. 무슨 공부를 합니까?
       A. 한국어를 공부합니다.

       Q. 뭐 좋아합니까?
       A. 음식을 좋아합니다.
       Q. 무슨 음식을 좋아합니까?
       A. 한국 음식을 좋아합니다.

    이해가 되었나요? :)
    You got it?

    [Daily Korean] '속', '안'?? - Difference between '속' and '안' (Beginner & Intermediate)

오늘의 한국어 공부 (Today's Korean learning)

    속 / 안

▶ 한국어 공부 시작.^^ (Korean learning, here we begin.^^)

    1. 괄호 에 숫자를 적으시오.
    2. 괄호 에 숫자를 적으시오.

    어떤 것이 맞는 표현일까요?
    Which one is correct?

대부분의 한국인들은 '안' 과 '속'의 차이를 인식하지 않은 채로 자연스럽게 사용하는 것 같습니다.
Most Koreans seem to use it naturally without aware of the difference between '안' and '속'.

여러분들도 많은 문장을 접하다보면 자연스럽게 습득할 수 있습니다.
You can also use it naturally if you read many sentences.

하지만 이 것에 어떤 차이가 있는지 알고 사용하면 더 좋겠지요? ^^
But it would be better if you know what difference is.

    크게 두 가지의 개념으로 설명하겠습니다.
    There are two main concepts.

이 두 가지의 개념으로 대부분의 '안/속'을 구분할 수 있지만 당연히 예외도 존재합니다.
Of course, although these two concepts can distinguish most of '안' and '속', there are exceptions.

하지만 예외들까지도 이해하려고 하면 너무 복잡해질 수 있습니다.
But trying to understand all of exceptions can be too complicated.

따라서 지금 설명하는 두 가지의 개념만 익히고 나머지 예외들은 그때그때 연습하는 것으로 하면 좋을 것 같습니다.
Therefore, it is better to learn only these two concepts, and to practice the rest of the exceptions at that time.

    1.

    먼저 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.
First, let's look at the example sentences.

       괄호 에 답을 쓰시오.
       버스 에 사람이 많다.
       자동차가 터널 으로 들어갔다.

       수박 이 꽉 찼다.
       바다 에는 물고기가 많다.
       보물을 땅 에 묻었다.

    어떤 차이가 있을까요?
    What's the difference?

'괄호, 버스, 터널'은 모두 비어있는 공간이 있습니다.
'괄호, 버스, 터널' are all have empty spaces.

그리고 '수박, 바다, 땅'은 모두 무엇인가로 가득 차있습니다.
And, '수박, 바다, 땅' are all filled with something.

즉, 첫 번째 개념은 비어있는 것과 가득 차있는 것으로 설명할 수 있습니다.
In other words, the first concepts can be described as being empty and full.

    '' : 비어있는 것 (Empty)
    '' : 가득 차있는 것 (Full)

    2.

가득 차있다는 것은 눈에 보이는 것 뿐만 아니라 추상적인 것도 포함됩니다.
Being full includes not only visible but also abstract,

       마음 에 꿈을 가져야 한다.

위의 예문처럼 '마음'에는 기쁨, 슬픔, 희망 등 여러가지 추상적인 감정이 가득 차있다고 볼 수 있습니다.
Like the example above, '마음' is filled with various abstract feelings such as joy, sadness, and hope etc.

따라서 '마음'도 '안'이 아니라 '속'을 사용하는 것이 자연스럽습니다.
Therefore, it is natural for '마음' to use '속' instead of '안'.

    퀴즈 한 번 풀어 볼까요? :) Quiz~

    1. 옷을 벗어서 옷장 ( 안 / 속 )에 넣었습니다.

    2. 교실 ( 안 / 속 )에 학생들이 많습니다.

    3. 그녀는 더이상 내 기억 ( 안 / 속 )에 없습니다.

    4.  머릿 ( 안 / 속 )이 복잡해 졌습니다.

    5. 도서관 ( 안 / 속 )에서는 떠들면 안됩니다.
